New Asia College's highest undergraduate honour at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, awarded for academic performance and leadership.
The Cheng Ming Award is New Asia College's highest undergraduate honour at CUHK. It recognized five consecutive years of academic excellence, an Outstanding Teaching Practice Award, and leadership in English teacher education during my undergraduate studies.
"His admirable virtues come from his modesty, sincerity, honesty and integrity. Tom never gives up in face of adversity and learn to embrace challenges with positivity and a strong mind."
— Prof. Eunice Tang, Faculty of Education
Mr. Cheng Chu-Hin, Tom, recipient of Cheng Ming Award, admitted to the five-year BA (English Studies) and BEd (English Language Education) co-terminal double degree at the Faculty of Education in 2013. As the Programme co-ordinator, I knew Tom as soon as he joined the Programme. Subsequently, I also taught him a number of courses and travelled with him on the outbound Teaching Practice tour to South Korea. In a recent conversation with Tom, he talked about our first individual Academic Advisor meeting back in his first year of study. He said that I had made a prediction of his academic achievement in our first encounter and, indeed, the prediction came true at the end. Tom graduated in 2018 with a First-Class Honour degree. Tom had performed remarkably since his first year of study. He excelled in all courses he took. Tom has demonstrated a capability for sustained academic excellence throughout the five years of study and was awarded Faculty Dean's Honours List and College Head's List (Merit) for 5 consecutive years. He was presented with an Outstanding Teaching Practice Award in his final year after his 7 weeks of Teaching Practicum in a local secondary school. During his course of study, Tom received other 13 different scholarships and awards at Faculty, College and University levels to acknowledge his academic excellence.
Although Tom was very busy with his tight study schedule, he never failed to put extra effort to improve himself by taking active part in professional development activities. Tom served as a Research Assistant for a number of research projects in Hong Kong and in England. He made use of the opportunities to learn from experienced researchers and to gain more updated information about teaching, learning and educational issues. His own research interests include Language Across the Curriculum and Learners' Intrinsic Motivation. In 2018, Tom had his debut international conference presentation on his undergraduate research in Hong Kong and in Macau.
Tom is aspired to be an English teacher. His devotion to the teaching profession can be reflected by his strong passion and prominent teaching record in school and education sectors. In particular, he played an active role in voluntary English teaching to support the underprivileged groups in Hong Kong. His continued contribution and involvement has gained him experiences to serve as mentor and even a leadership position in some of these English programmes. During the outbound Teaching Practice tour to South Korea, I witnessed his enthusiasm and desire to become a skillful and effective English teacher. He was attentive and observant to his students' needs and was responsive to adapt his teaching to the level of his students. He is energetic in the classroom and he cares about each individual student. As a teacher educator, I am grateful to have someone like you who well-deserves to be the role-model of the younger ones! Well-done, Tom!
Tom is a cheerful, positive and approachable young man. He is bright, diligent and motivated as a student. He is helpful, reliable and caring as a classmate and friend. He is co-operative, efficient and responsible as a co-worker. Yet, his admirable virtues come from his modesty, sincerity, honesty and integrity. Tom never gives up in face of adversity and learn to embrace challenges with positivity and a strong mind. I am so proud of such a young man!
As the recipient of Cheng Min Award, Tom has demonstrated his academic excellence throughout his university study. In our first meeting, I could already tell from his eyes, his body language and his words that this young man was so determined to strive for excellence, so thirst for knowledge and so eager to nurture the future generations with love and care.
Congratulations, Tom! You well-deserve the honour! All the best!
